ccxcix. PRINCE: A Million Days

ccxcix. PRINCE (1958-2016)

A Million Days (2004)
Prince, everything
(3:50)

from Musicology.

It's only been an hour since you left me
But it feels like a million days
If I had a magic wand I could turn back time
I'd never let you go away

I didn't have the heart to say I'm sorry
Now I haven't got a heart at all
I could tolerate the pain if I could take to my best riend
But you won't even call

I'm contemplating pulling out my suitcase
And packing everything I own
I didn't back then but I do know now
Wherever you are is home
I'll crawl on my belly and beg you
But you're so far away
You've only been gone for an hour
But it seems like a million days

It's only been an hour since you left me
I wish I had somebody to blame
But you're the perfect picture of what love should look like
And I want to be your frame
It's only been an hour but it feels like a million days

A million days
One hundred thousand million days
Come home, come home baby
I can't take this no more
Well, come home baby oh yeah
Baby, I know I shouldn't put my faith in heroes
But I can't see you any other way
It's only been an hour since you left me girl
Feels like a million, feels like a million days

ccxcv. McCARTNEY, Paul: Mrs Vandebilt

ccxcv. McCARTNEY, Paul (1942-       )

Mrs Vandebilt (1973)
PM, lead and backing vocals, bass, guitars, keyboards, drums, percussion
Linda McCartney, harmony and backing vocals, keyboards, percussion
Denny Laine, harmony and backing vocals, guitars, percussion
Howie Casey, saxophone
(4:41)

Down in the jungle living in a tent
You don't use money you don't pay rent
You don't ever know the time
But you don't mind

Ho Hey Ho ...

When your light is on the blink
You never think of worrying
What's the use of worrying?
When your bus has left the stop
You'd better drop your hurrying
What's the use of hurrying?
Leave me alone Mrs Vandebilt
I've got plenty of time of my own
What's the use of worrying?
What's the use of hurrying?
What's the use of anything?

Ho Hey Ho ...

What's the use of worrying?
What's the use of hurrying?
What's the use of anything?

Ho Hey Ho ...

When your pile is on the wane
You don't complain of robbery
Run away don't bother me
What's the use of worrying? (no use!)
What's the use of anything?
Leave me alone Mrs. Washington
I've done plenty of time on my own

What's the use of worrying?
What's the use of hurrying? (no use!)
What's the use of anything?

Ho Hey Ho ...

ccxciv. MITCHELL, Joni: Lead Balloon

ccxciv. MITCHELL, Joni (1943-       )

Lead Balloon (1998)
JM, guitar orchestra, vocals, background vocals
Larry Klein, bass
Brian Blade, drums
Wayne Shorter, saxophone
Michael Landau, low lead guitar
(3:37)

from Taming The Tiger.

"Kiss my ass," I said
And I threw my drink ...
Tequila trickling down
His business suit
Must be the Irish blood
Fight before you think!
Too late now
You can't kowtow
You can't undo it!
It's his town
And that went down
Like a lead balloon
Lead, lead, lead, lead balloon.
He said, "sic her Rover!"
That went over
Like a lead balloon
Lead, lead, lead, lead balloon

An angry man is just an angry man
But an angry woman ...
Bitch!
I had to ask him for
A helping hand ...
Him with the heart
Of a Bonaparte ...
Or a frozen fish!
It's his town
And that went down
Like a lead balloon
Lead, lead, lead, lead balloon
He said, "sic her Rover!"
That went over
Like a lead balloon
Lead, lead, lead, lead balloon

The booklet is filled with her paintings.

ccxciii. ZAPPA, Frank: I'm Not Satisfied

ccxciii. ZAPPA, Frank (1940-1993)

I'm Not Satisfied (1966)
FZ, guitar, vocals
Jimmy Carl Black, drums, percussion, vocals
Ray Collins, vocals, harmonica
Roy Estrada, bass, boy soprano
Elliot Ingber, guitar
(2:38)

Frank's first album remains a classic nearly 60 years later. Probably only the second double-album (Dylan's Blonde on Blonde beat him by a month), Freak Out! was neatly bifurcated by the first two sides, and the last two -- altered pop songs, and freak-out music (although Side Three opened with the tremendous blues, Trouble Every Day) ...

**

FZ starts us off with the dominant (E) before we finally reach the tonic in Bar 11! He works very hard to keep the music away from the tonic as much as possible (not satisfying our ears ... we're "not satisfied" either) ...

He teases us later by moving ii / iii / IV / iii / ii / V / and finally I.

Later he sneaks in a beautiful modulation to C Major using the minor subdominant as a pivot chord: iv/ii (in C) / iii / IV / V / IV / V / ... and once again, fails to supply the tonic chord, instead moving to C# Minor (iii) and then IV / V / I in A ...

The written-out ending is supplemented with horns.

ccxc. WONDER, Stevie: Something To Say

ccxc. WONDER, Stevie (1950-       )

Something To Say (1970)
SW, vocals, harmonic, drums, keyboards, percussion
James Jamerson, bass
Dennis Coffey, guitar
Richard "Pistol" Allen, drums
The Funk Brothers, other instruments
(3:26)

At 20-years-old, the Boy Wonder put out his 12th studio album!

Although not a huge hit, this song shows his songwriting abilities developing traces of later compositional habits, like a cool descending bass line, melting into a diminished chord; and half-step modulations, which gives his clear, tuneful upper register a workout.

cclxxxix. DAVIS, Miles: All The Things You Are

cclxxxix. DAVIS, Miles (1926-1991)

All The Things You Are (1949)
MD, trumpet
James Moody, tenor saxophone
Todd Dameron, piano
Barney Spieler, bass
Kenny Clarke, drums
(4:14)

Early Miles -- 23-years-old.

His solo begins with some cool, but disjointed, phrases; gradually he gets into it, and settles into a boppish 1/8th-note groove, with Clarke kicking along.

Dameron's solo is full of block chords, and the young Moody plays conservatively.

cclxxxviii. ZAPPA, Frank (1940-1993)

Scene 71: What Will This Evening Bring Me This Morning (Dialog Protection Reel) (2021)
FZ, guitar, bass
Mark Volman, vocals, special material
Howard Kaylan, vocals, special material
Ian Underwood, keyboards, winds
Aynsley Dunbar, drums
George Duke, keyboards, trombone
Martin Lickert, bass
(1:39)

from: 200 Motels 50th Anniversary Edition.

For the 50th anniversary of 200 Motels (1971), the ZFT put out this 6-CD set of everything they dug up from the Vault.

"Found in the Vault, these protection safety tapes reveal an early version of the movie. Some bits heard here did not end up in the final edit. The music mixes are in mono and were created before FZ went into Whitney Studios for over-dubbing and sweetening. This 'work in progress', how historic, is an interesting listen."

**

This particular track sounds pretty much the same (but in mono) from what ended up in the film and soundtrack. Nice to hear Duke on trombone.

The package includes some nifty fetishable items, like the original booklet (with reproductions of some of the orchestral scores); a motel room key (50), and a "do not disturb" sign.

cclxxxvii. MUSIC MAN, THE (soundtrack): Sincere

cclxxxvii. MUSIC MAN, THE (soundtrack)

Sincere (1957)
(1:38)

from The Music Man (soundtrack).

I was seven or eight when my parents took us to New York to see this musical. The result was my demanding a trombone when we got back home, even though I wasn't old enough for the school's music program yet. So I taught myself the basics before starting 4th grade.

The barbershop quartet completely fascinated me. In the play/movie, Hill teaches them to sing by "talking low." They are soon bursting out in the most glorious four-part harmony:

cclxxxv. BEATLES, THE / SWINGLE SINGERS, THE

THE BEATLES
Goodnight (1968)
Ringo, vocal
George Martin, piano
The Mike Sammes Singers: backing vocals by 4 men and 4 women
Orchestra: 12 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 1 harp, 3 flutes, clarinet, horn, vibraphone, double bass
(3:13)

from: The Beatles.

THE SWINGLE SINGERS
Goodnight
(2:13)

from Ticket To Ride.

You'd probably guess Paul wrote it, but you'd be wrong. It's a John song; perhaps the most tender thing he ever wrote before Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) and Woman from Double Fantasy (1980) ...

... in fact, according to Paul, John did not sing it himself because he did not want to "tarnish his image." The other Beatles were the only ones to ever hear him sing it, as he taught it to Ringo.

And of course, Martin's arrangement is superb.

SWINGLE SINGERS, THE
I Am The Walrus (1999)
(4:26)

from Zappa '88: The Last U.S. Show.

A John masterpiece -- with two interesting covers ...

"The first line was written on one acid trip one weekend, the second line on another acid trip the next weekend, and it was filled in after I met Yoko." -- JL

Pete Shotton recalls watching John writing feverishly: Semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower . . . then, turning to him with a smile, he quipped, Let the fuckers work that one out, Pete!

Remember, we're still talking four-track recording in those days! When the Beatles part had been mixed down, Martin had to manually sync the strings and voices from another four-track tape from another tape recorder. That's why there are some spots where you can hear a slight gap between the orchestra and rhythm track.

cclxxvii. ZAPPA, Frank/THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND: The History of Whipping Post (chronologically)

cclxxvii. ZAPPA, Frank (1940-1993); THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND

The History of Whipping Post (chronologically)

Whipping Post was a track on the Allman Brothers first album, The Allman Brothers Band (1969) ...

Gregg:

"I didn't know the intro was in 11/8 time. I just saw it as three sets of three, and then two to jump on the next three sets ... Duane said, 'that's good man, I didn't know that you understood 11/8.' Of course, I said something intelligent like, 'what's 11/8?' Duane just said, 'okay, dumbass, I'll try to draw it up on paper for you.'"

**

On September 23rd and 24th, 1974, Zappa was performing in Helsinki. The band was getting ready to play Montana, when someone from the audience starting screaming something unintelligible:

Guy in the audience: "Whipping Post"!
FZ: Say that again please?
Guy in the audience: "Whipping Post"!
FZ: "Whipping Post"? Ok, just a second . . . (do you know that?) Oh, sorry, we don't know that one. Anything else? Hum me a few bars of it, please, just show me how it goes, please. Just sing, sing me "Whipping Post" and then maybe we'll play it with you.
Guy in the audience: Ooh-ooh-ooh . . .
FZ: That you very much. And now . . . judging from the way you sang, it must a John Cage composition, right? Here we go, "Montana." One two, one two three four ...

**

Of course, at this point, Zappa figured they better learn the tune, in case some other crazy person requested it. I'm sure he was excited that it was in 11/8.

It next appeared in a rousing version from this live concert, released posthumously on Halloween 81.

**

Again, from December 11th and 12th, 1981 performances in Santa Monica and San Diego, released on Them Or Us (1984).

**

Does Humor Belong In Music? (1984); from the '84 band live:

FZ, lead guitar, vocals
Ray White, rhythm guitar, vocals
Ike Willis, rhythm guitar, vocals
Bobby Martin, keyboards, saxophone, vocals, French Horn
Allan Zavod, keyboards
Scott Thunes, bass
Chad Wackerman, drums
Dweezil Zappa, lead guitar
(8:22)

**

and finally with the amazing '88 band on the posthumous release Zappa '88: The Last U.S. Show (2021).

Where you gonna go in your winter coat
I wonder what you're hiding cause it's not too cold
It's already too late
Somebody's gonna get you
And if I hold you too tight, someone else won't get to
Ohhhh wouldn't you know it, I keep it rolling
Considering no one punching a path
Facing the blast and the moon and the math
But you still never knew where your soul is attached
Oh, wouldn't you know it, ah wouldn't you know it
I'm so confused
I can't move
I can't even try
I hope you find
Someone to lose, someday
Now where you gonna go like a cobra coiled
Sweating in a sweater, you've got too much style
But you're never alone, someday they're gonna get you
I hope you find
Someone to lose, someday
I hope you find
I hope you find
Someone to lose, someday
