This symphony (commissioned by the Brucknerhaus, Linz) really belongs in my Classical blog, but since everything else by JZ is in Non-Classical, we'll look at it here.

In the depths of the forest a spring wells up; a river is born

2. Mountain Waters

Waterfalls of melted snow cascade into the young river

3. Empire

An impression of life in the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph at the turn of the century

4. Introduction --

5. Gypsy

History of a free people without a home

6. Voice of the Danube

On the riverbed, an imposing rock watched history flowing by

7. Unknown Soldier

9. Sultan

    900 years of Ottoman Empire

dxciv. VARIOUS ARTISTS: I Remember Clifford

dxciv. VARIOUS ARTISTS

24 Versions

I Remember Clifford (1957, Benny Golson)

The tune is extraordinary in so many ways.

The introduction opens on the sub-dominant. Look how he weaves his way downwards to the ii chord (F Minor Seventh), altered dominants, and finally to the tonic. The main  melody crawls up to the vi chord (C Minor Seventh) with a chromatic pattern using diminished-seventh chords, then

The turnaround (ii-V; the last bar of the 1st ending) is remarkable for being preceded by that weird A7(b9) chord -- a tritone away from the tonic ...

Golson cleverly brings back the intro, again with an altered dominant (B-Flat Seventh, with a raised fifth).

from Study in Brown

Written by Ray Noble in 1938 as the first movement of his Indian Suite.

A ferocious tempo allows the mostly whole-note (footballs!) rhythm to float above a fiery rhythm section.

The tune is an AABA form -- but it's the B section that gives the tune its delicious harmonic flavor. From the tonic B-Flat, via ii-V-I progressions, Noble moves to B Major, A Major, and G Major, before returning to the tonic.

Brown was formidable musical force, playing trumpet, piano and drums. He co-founded the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey, then went on to form his own group, with the above personnel.

Brown -- who didn't mess with drugs or alcohol -- practiced constantly. His technique is evident.

On June 26, 1956, Brown and Powell (Bud's brother) were travelling to Chicago for a gig. Driving through the night, Bud's wife Nancy was at the wheel as the two musicians slept. Near Bedford, Pennsylvania, she lost control of the car, sending it flying off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and killing all three.

Brown was 25-years-old.

Tomorrow: The threnody written by Benny Golson that forever cemented his name onto a fantastic jazz classic ...

Derek Shulman, vocals
Ray Shulman, bass
John Weathers, drums

Two weeks in Spain makes the year
disappear easy
Two weeks in Spain, you forget, bored
and yet weary
We're back again, drink the wine,
weather's fine, only
Two weeks in Spain's not enough

Never think where you're going
Paradise a while knowing
Everything that you're doing
It's a carnival

Let it go so remember
Counting sheep in September
Let 'em know you're the master
It's a roundabout

Who put the cat outside?
Who put the cat outside?
Who put the cat outside?
To sleep, have things to do
There's other things on my mind
There's other things your my mind
There's other things your my mind
So close the fucking door

See ya later (tomorrow)
See ya later (tomorrow)
See ya later (tomorrow)
See ya later

There's a plane in the sky
There's a plane in the sky
There's a plane in the sky
If those people fall, they will die
There's other things on my mind
There's other things your my mind
There's other things your my mind

See ya later (tomorrow)
See ya later (tomorrow)
See ya later (tomorrow)
See ya later
See ya later

Black leather lady Lord carried her bags
The hell horn, hell horn, hell horn
Horn rim crimped

Glasses look out on the pale hell bent
Moon milk run

Black lady
Black leather lady
Done had a white, white, white poor son

Mama, mama, here come Doctor Dark
Horse clippin', clappin' 'n his ol' hooves makin' sparks
Gotta git me who I want to
God, Lord knows I've got to oh see that Doctor Dark

Mama, mama, here come Doctor Dark
Horse clippin', clappin' 'n his ol' hooves makin' sparks
Shed a tear on the meadow lark n' like
Tear t' drink

'N tear apart 'n black n' white n' like

The moon a pail of milk spilled down black in the night
Little girl lost a tear
'N her kite
T' the night 'n like 'n light

God, Lord knows I've got to oh see that Doctor Dark
