dcclxxxix. VARIOUS ARTISTS: Chega de Saudade

dcclxxxix. VARIOUS ARTISTS

Composer: Antônio Carlos Jobim.

What a tune! Notice the beautiful syncopation ...

When he moves to D Major (bar 33), the warmth hits you like a ray of sunshine. The two diminished seventh chords add a suspenseful richness.

A temporary modulation to the subdominant (G Major, bar 57) is prepared by those beautiful two bars (vi / bvi / ii / V / I) ...

I got a girl with a little rubber head
Rinse her out every night just before I go to bed
She never talk back like a lady might do
And she looks like she loves it every time I get through

And her name is
P-I-N-K-Y
P-I-N, no lie
K-Y, me-oh-my
She's $69.95
Give her a try

P-I-N-K-Y
P-I-N, I cry
K-Y, don't be shy
$69.95, boy
Give her a try

Her eyes is all shut in an ecstasy face
You can cram it down her throat, people, any old place
Throw the little switch on her battery pack
You can poot it, you can shoot it till your wife gets back

And her name is
P-I-N-K-Y
P-I-N, I cry
K-Y, don't be shy
$69.95, boy
Give her a try

I got a girl with a little rubber heard

Some nights the ER is quiet as an EKG
But tonight it feels like every broken bone
Tonight it feels like every wounded soul
Is filling out a form or on the phone

I can't talk now, I'm in a parade
I can't talk now, I'm in a parade
Can't talk to you now, I'm in a parade
I can't talk now, I'm in a parade

Diagnosis: Schizophrenic
Prognosis: Guarded
Medication: Seroquel
Occupation: Street Angel

I drank some orange soda
Then I drank some grape
I wear a hoodie now to cover my mistake
My head's a lollipop
My head is a lollipop
My head's a lollipop and everyone
Wants to lick it
I wear a hoodie now so I won't get a ticket
I write my verse for the universe
That's who I am

I can't talk now, I'm in a parade
I can't talk now, I'm in a parade
I can't talk now, I'm in a parade
Can't talk to you now, I'm in a parade

Frank liked to use "Son of" in a lot of his titles. This time the son has vastly outdone his dad.

The melody is the same, but Zappa plays a long guitar solo -- one of his very finest.
  • Zappa often said how he hated the ii/V/I cadence -- so prominent in most pop (and classical) music.
  • Here's the harmony of this 16-bar form:
    • ii/V ii/V ii/V ii/V ii/V ii/V ii/V ii/V I/vi I/vi I/vi I/vi IV-V / vi / bVII / bVII
  • Note the last four bars, crawling up to the tonic -- IV-V-vi-bVII -- but no tonic; back to ii -- completely avoid a tonic resolution!
  • guitar solo = 9 times through the form!
    • 2x features Ian Underwood playing complex scales ...
    • 3x features sax riffs for the first 8; FZ picks up the solo in Bar 9 ...
    • 4x = check out the incredible riff in bars 71-72 ...
    • 5x = beautiful off-beat accents (bars 97-98) ...
    • 6x = Zappa adds a non-chord C-Sharp and G-Sharp ...
    • 7x = amazing trills! (bar 129) ...
    • 8x = That simple/silly lick in the C/Am section (bars 153-155) ...
    • 9x = On the B-Flat chord, he stacks fourths (E-Flat; A-Flat; D-Flat) (bars 175-176) ...

dcclxxxi. JARRETT, Keith: Vienna, Part 1

dcclxxxi. JARRETT, Keith (1945-       )

Vienna, Part 1 (1992)
KJ, piano

"I have courted the fire for a very long time, and many sparks have flown in the past, but the music on this recording speaks, finally, the language of the flame itself." -- KJ

Recorded at the Vienna State Opera, July 13, 1991.

There is nothing in our universe that equals a Keith Jarrett solo piano improvisation. From nothing, he begins to play.

The first 24 minutes is very contemplative, with soft colorful chords filling the still air. At around 24:00, he begins a mind-blowing perpetuum mobile section, followed by some amazing pointillism.

In this performance, he doesn't get into the funky groove he does on some other improvisations. But he ends with a transcendental church-like section with varied cadences to the tonic, which ends the first part of this concert with a satisfying feeling akin to a beautiful exotic butterfly landing on your hand.

Take 42 minutes and bathe yourselves in this rare musical beauty.

**

Aja was a big-budget production. The "band" consisted of many different combinations of personnel. Certain players made the cut on most of the tracks.

Listen to Rainey's high double-stops (Bar 9)!

Most of the guitar solos on Aja were played by Carlton -- but here Becker steps in and plays a very funky solo (3rd verse + outro).

When you're in some bad light
In the climbing flood
And you kneel before them
It's common sense
It's practical
Lay low
One moment I beg
I bolt
On a thousand legs
What you can't say swallow
At the moment I'm bored
Buried more and more and more and more

I slam my finger in the door of love
God damn the judging
Strangers judge
All I want, all that I want
A burning bush
Or
A button to push
A chance encounter
With common sense
Common sense
