Knockin' on your door
Will you let it come?
Will you let it run your life?

Someone will be waiting for you at your door
When you get home tonight
Ah yes, he's gonna tell you darkness gives you much more
Than you get from the light

Classic plastic guards well they're your special friend
He sees you every night
Well he calls himself the brother but you know it's no game
You're never out of his sight

1984
Knockin' on your door
Will you let it come?
Will you let it run your life?

It's time you started thinking inside your head
That you should stand up and fight
Oh just where will you be when your freedom is dead
Won't you listen tonight?

Those classic plastic coppers, they are your special friends
They see you every night
Well they call themselves protection but you know it's no game
You're never out of their sight

 cdxlix. THE BEACH BOYS

Here Today (1966)
Al Jardine, vocals
Bruce Johnston, vocals
Mike Love, vocals
Brian Wilson, vocals, bass
Carl Wilson, vocals
Dennis Wilson, vocals
Session musicians
(3:07)

from: Pet Sounds

Brian Wilson/Tony Asher song.

It kicks in with no intro and with a B Minor chord in third inversion! The song begins to really shine with the descending bass line (bars 9-10) ...

He then turns it around with an ascending bass line (bars 15-20).

After the second verse, there's a wacky little instrumental section, followed by a cool outro.

Missouri Uncompromised (1976)
PM, guitars
Jaco Pastorius, bass
Bob Moses, drums
(4:15)

from: Bright Size Life

Already on Album Number One, Pat is composing unusual and captivating changes -- the Bb/A (bar 5); the over/chords with descending bass (bars 5-10).

Jaco slips and slides but doesn't solo here. He plays the last eight bars in unison with Pat.

from: River: The Joni Letters

"Herbie and Larry Klein would like to thank Wayne, Dave, Vinnie and Lionel for their patience and commitment to going deep beneath the words." -- HH

And a deep dive it is.

Even without a singer, you can feel Joni's words:

Give me some time
I feel like I'm losing mine
Out here on this horizon line
With the earth spinning
And the sky forever rushing
No one knows
They can never get that close
Guesses at most

cdxlvi. BEATLES, THE: Not Guilty

cdxlvi. THE BEATLES

Not Guilty (1968)

Four versions

1. Esher demo (May 1968)
George, composer, all instruments
(3:05)

From a YouTube comment:

"Paul would never have wanted a good George song on the White Album. He'd have had to sacrifice space reserved for steaming piles of crap like Martha My Dear and Wild Honey Pie (seriously? Is there a worse song than that piece of shit in the entire Beatles catalog?)"

Disagree about Martha, but the poster is not far off about Wild Honey Pie.

Not Guilty is no masterpiece, but it would have easily fit into the eclectic assemblage that was The White Album.

Now that we've all seen The Beatles: Get Back (2021), it's certainly no secret that George was not a happy camper towards the end. The lyrics seem to refer to some tensions -- perhaps between George and Paul.

**

Not that the other guys weren't game to record the thing. In four days of Abbey Road sessions, they racked up an astonishing 102 takes! (Some were false starts, breakdowns, or rehearsals.)

The "waltz section" required careful attention. "Without the waltz, it's easier," said the composer. "Yeah, I always find that," John replied. Still, they kept at it.

**

It's still incredible to realize this was all done on just four tracks! Ken Scott mixed down two channels to allow for a more powerful lead vocal -- overdubbed on August 12th.

**

The red type is missing from Version #3.

The waltz bit is gone by 1979 when George re-recorded it for his own album.

Not guilty
For getting in your way
While you're trying to steal the day.
Not guilty
And I'm not here for the rest
I'm not trying to steal your vest.

I am not trying to be smart,
I only want what I can get.
I'm really sorry for your ageing head.
But like you heard me said:
Not guilty.

Not guilty
Of being on your street
Getting underneath your feet
Not guilty

No use handing me a writ.
While I'm trying to do my bit.

I don't expect to take your heart.
I only want what I can get.
I'm really sorry that you're underfed.
But like you heard me said:
Not guilty.

Not guilty
For looking like a freak,
Making friends with every Sikh.
Not guilty
For leading you astray
On the road to Mandalay.

I won't upset the apple cart.
I only want what I can get.
I'm really sorry that you've been misled.
But like you heard me said:
Not guilty.

Yeah, now I'm back here in
Hollywood. I pick up the phone, turn
The pages
Hi, got a friend and he said I should
Not be on my own. Come on over,
Take you to our show. What are you
Doing?

Who do you think you are? You're not
Even the main star
Even if I could come, how would I
Know you're the one?
Who do you think you are? You can
Put around you're a star
Well I might not be on time. Leave my
Name at the door

Well, you can bet here that anyone
Wants to take a ride
No tomorrow
So you can bet here that everyone
Will be at your side
Doesn't matter

You can't fool around, you're a star

Don't make me sleep on the couch
Love Jones is on the TV again, baby
Eye want to go down south, yeah

Oh come on, baby
It's undignified to sleep alone
That's what all the people that
Ain't got nobody do,
Talkin' on the telephone

Don't make me crash
Don't make me sleep
Without your kiss
Tossin' and-a-turnin'
With every inch of me yearnin'
Don't make me, don't make me
Don't cha make me, don't cha make me
Don't cha make me suffer this

Eye know we agreed
Eye know we agreed to be married
You shouldn't have let me unzip your dress
Why'd you do it, baby?
Confess you tease
Unless you please
Don't make me, don't make me
Sleep on the couch

from: Zappa '88: The Last U.S. Show

Thirty-four years ago, The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life (1991) [so named because -- with the exception of some East Coast cities -- most of the U.S. never got to hear them] played their final concert performance in the U.S. -- at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on March 25, 1988 ...

It's doubtful that anyone imagined it would be Zappa's final concert ever in the U.S. But it was.

Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk was a new tune, written for this tour ... busted TV evangelists were all over the news in those days. It's lyrics were awfully prescient:

"Suddenly
The rights of 'certain people' disappear
Mysteriously?

Now, wouldn't that sort of qualify
As an American Tragedy?
Especially if he covers it up,
Sayin', 'Jesus told it to me!'

I hope we never see that day,
In the Land of the Free --
Or someday will we?
Will we?"

**

There's an ugly little weasel 'bout three-foot nine
Face puffed up from cryin' 'n lyin'
'Cause her sweet little hubby's
Suckin' prong part time
(In the name of The Lord)

Get a clue, little shrew
Oh yeah,oh yeah
Jesus thinks you're a jerk
Would He really choose Tammy to do His Work?

(Let's just think about that for a moment.)

Robertson says that he's The One
Oh he sure is, if Armageddon
Is your idea of family fun,
An' he's got some planned for you!
(Now tell me that ain't true)

Now, what if Jimbo's slightly gay,
Will Pat let Jimbo get away?
Everything we've heard him say
Indicates that Jim must pay,
(And it just might hurt a bit)
But keep that money rollin' in,
'Cause Pat and naughty Jimbo
Can't get enough of it

Perhaps it's their idea
Of an Affirmative Action Plan
To give White Trash a "special break";
Well, they took those Jeezo-bucks and ran
To the bank!
To the bank! To the bank! To the bank!
And every night we can hear them thank
Their Buddy, up above
For sending down His love
(While you all smell the glove)

Jim and Pat should take a pole
(Right up each saintly glory-hole),
With tar and feathers too --
Just like they'd love to do to you
('Cause they think you are bad --
And they are very mad)
'Cause some folks don't want prayer in school!
(We'd need an ark to survive the drool
Of Micro-publicans, raised on hate,
And "Jimbo-Jumbo" when they graduate)

Convinced they are "The Chosen Ones" --
And all their parents carry guns
And hold them cards in the N.R.A.
(With their fingers on the trigger
When they kneel and pray)

With a Ku-Klux muu-muu
In the back of the truck,
If you ain't Born Again,
They wanna mess you up, screamin':
"No abortion, no-siree!"
"Life's too precious, can't you see!"
(What's that hangin' from a neighbor's tree?
Why, it looks like "colored folks" to me --
Would THEY do THAT
They've been doin' it for years!
Seriously?)

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the dynamic Eric Buxton

Imagine if you will,
A multi-millionaire TV Evangelist,
Saved from Korean Combat duty by his father, a U.S. Senator

Studied law --
But is not qualified to practice it

Father of a "love child"
Who, in adulthood, hosts the remnants
Of papa's religious propaganda program

Claims to be a "Faith Healer,"
But has, in the past
Dealt sternly with everything from hemorrhoids to hurricanes

Involved with funding for an "undeclared war" in Central America
Claiming Ronald Reagan and Oliver North as close friends

Involved in suspicious "tax-avoidance schemes,"
(Under investigation for 16 months by the I.R.S.)

Claims to be a MAN OF GOD;
Currently seeking the United States Presidency,
Hoping we will all follow him into --
The Twilight Zone

(Good work, Eric! Good!)

What if Pat gets in the White House,
Or even Eric?
(No fuckin' way, Ike,
He ain't getting in this time)
And suddenly
(He's gonna try again in '92)
The rights of "certain people" disappear
Well, mysteriously?

Now wouldn't that sort of qualify
as an American Tragedy?
Especially if he covers it up,
("And I mean that")
Sayin', "Jesus told it to me!"
(Just me, babe. Like, we're tight. We're like this.)

I hope we never see that day,
In the Land of the Free --
Or someday will we?
Will we?

And if you don't know by now,
The truth of what I'm tellin' you,
Then, surely I have failed somehow --
(Sigh)
Surely I have failed somehow
(Oh, Tammy, isn't it romantic?)
Surely I have failed somehow

And Jesus will think I'm a jerk, just like you --
If you let those TV Preachers
Make a monkey out of you!
(Tell 'em!)

I said:
"Jesus will think you're a jerk"
And it would be true!

There's an old rugged cross
In the land of the cotton
They keep it burnin' out there on the lawn
But those assholes are still just as rotten

Jim and Tammy!
Oh, baby!
You gotta go!
You really got to go!
Jim and Tammy got to go

Two of the world's greatest jazz pianists get together and play duets: September 2007 at the Blue Note in Tokyo.

"1 night, 2 pianos, 2 sets, 4 hands, 12 songs, 20 fingers, 176 keys, about 600 people in the audience and thousands of musical ideas exchanging between the two pianists and the audience -- a recipe for the pleasurable and invigorating evening it was, in the most comfortable jazz club in the world -- the Tokyo Blue Note. -- CC

Probably the first recording for both Metheny and Jaco. (Metheny would play on Gary Burton's date, Ring, a few months later; and Jaco would later play on Metheny's debut album, Bright Size Life.)

There's not a hint of Carla Bley's tune here! It's mostly a group improvisation.

Here's the Paul Bley Trio doing it.

Will make it come true
Make a list of the things He'll do for you
Ain't no risk now ... let His love
Rain down on you
He will wash away
The past so that we may start anew

from: Chunga's Revenge

June 24, 1970. The Bailiffscourt Hotel in West Sussex, England. Phil Franks -- a photographer -- recalls the incident:

"By the time I'd got around to the other side of the building there were at least another six cameramen there in a circle around this poor guy, who had thought he'd just maybe enjoy his Remy Martin with some fresh air and bird-song in the garden.

He looked pretty unhappy about being followed out, and really wasn't into the idea of another 'photo-opportunity.' I was just focusing my portrait lens on him as he began to yawn, with my free eye I noticed the other guys lower their cameras ... he'd been giving out some pretty heavy vibes since we'd all cornered him again and I think these guys felt intimidated, and anyway, they just wanted the standard kinda image for their picture editors ...

When I saw that image in my view-finder it just screamed 'FRANK ZAPPA!' at me ..."

Roundabout (1971)
Jon Anderson, vocals
Steve Howe, guitars, vocals
Chris Squire, bass, vocals
Rick Wakeman, keyboards
Bill Bruford, drums, percussion
(8:30)

from: Fragile

March 1971. On tour supporting their previous release (The Yes Album), Anderson -- high as hell -- kept noticing all the roundabouts they were going through:

"Everything was vivid and mystical"

By August they had fired Tony Kaye (for lack of interest in working with new keyboard instruments!) and hired Wakeman.

Sixteen-track recording was relatively new and the band took advantage of the tech. For instance, the opening sound is Wakeman playing an octave of low E's, running it backwards, and carefully mixing it. That sort of attention to detail pervades the entire album.

Naturally, the track was cut down to three-minute single size once it became popular enough for airplay ...
