cdlxxxvi. STONE, Angus & Julia: Crash and Burn

cdlxxxvi. STONE, Angus (1986-       ) & Julia (1984-       )

Crash and Burn (2014)
AS, vocals, guitar
Rohin Brown, guitar
Jason Lader, bass
Lenny Castro, percussion
Thomas Bartlett, keyboards
Elliot Hammond, drums
(6:36)

Won't you take me
Be my love next door
When you run out
I can bring some more
Won't you throw down
This heart of mine
And I'll roll out
My stretch of time

Billy opened
Up a can of worms
So I lit up
Smoke and let it burn
Will you come back
If I turn and run
Will you come find me
If I crash and burn?
Will you come find me?
If I crash and burn?
Will you come find me?
If I crash and burn?

Look so pretty when you brush your hair
Won't you be so kind to take me there
Will you come back if I turn and run

Will you come find me
If I crash and burn
Will you come find me
If I crash and burn
Will you come find me

Won't you take me
Be my love next door
When you run out
I can bring some more
When you run out

When you run out

cdlxxxv. KENEALLY, Mike: Backwards Deb

cdlxxxv. KENEALLY, Mike (1961-       )

Backwards Deb (2000)
MK, vocals, guitar, keyboards
Bryan Beller, bass
Marc Ziegenhagen, keyboards
Jason Harrison Smith, drums
Tricia Williams, percussion
Rick Musallam, guitar, vocals
Evan Francis, alto saxophone, flute
(5:35)

from: Dancing

Without a word of warning
The ceiling falls on the floor
And all of them I been scorning
Will take my bitter seed no more
Tell a tall one
There's a lie in my eye
When I call for my neighbor to help he will kiss me goodbye

And I'm stranded and don't have a dime to phone
I ought to be alone
I landed on something wrong
I ought to be more strong
Stuck in a backwards song

Will the people who made me give up a dollar for me now?
And anybody who'd taste me take a piece of me somehow
Tell a tall one
Is it in me to try to live in line with my calling
Not to dream it in faithless lies?

And I'm stranded and don't have a dime to phone
I ought to be alone
I landed on something wrong
I ought to be more strong
Stuck in a backwards song

It's dark outside
And it's dark inside
And my heart, it cries
Why don't I go on home?
Tell a tall one
There's a lie in my eye, but someone's dying to love me
Someone who'd die if I couldn't survive

And I'm stranded and don't have a dime to phone
I ought to be alone
I landed on something wrong
I ought to be more strong
Stuck in a backwards song

cdlxxxiv. YES: Then

cdlxxxiv. YES

Then (1970)
Jon Anderson, vocals, percussion
Peter Banks, guitars, vocals
Chris Squire, bass, vocals
Tony Kaye, keyboards
Bil Bruford, drums, percussion
Royal College of Music students, brass, strings
(5:52)

With their second album, Yes imitated The Moody Blues, The Nice, and other bands that were using classical musicians to add a sophisticated flavor to their prog-rock sound ...

Peter Banks was not a happy camper (a lot of his parts were taken over by the orchestra) and was soon fired and replaced by Steve Howe.

People were paying attention to this band -- Pete Townshend was an early fan.

An Anderson composition ...
  • Bruford's drumming
  • Squire and Kaye
  • the tempo change before the last verse

And in a time that's closer
Life will be even older -- Then.
Souls will be complicated
Life will be consummated -- Then.
Hearts will be brought together
Soon in our minds forever -- Then.

As long as we see
There's only us who can change it
Only us to rearrange it
At the the start of a new kind of day

Love is the only answer
Hate is the root of cancer -- Then.
Truth is just for the being
And is the sight for seeing -- Then.
Thoughts will be thought together
Soon in our minds forever -- Then.

As long as we see
There's only us who can change it
Only us to rearrange it
At the the start of a new kind of day

And in a time that's closer
Life willl be even bolder -- Then.
Love is the only answer
Hate is the root of cancer -- Then.
Thoughts will be thought together
Soon in our minds forever -- Then.

cdlxxxii. JARRETT, Keith: La Fenice -- Part III

cdlxxxii. JARRETT, Keith (1945-        )

La Fenice -- Part III (2018)
KJ, piano
(9:47)

from: La Fenice

Recorded in 2006.

Every Jarrett solo piano improvisation is different. Here he gets lyrically funky on a two-chord riff for six minutes; then slows things down with a building improv on just one chord (F).

Ceaseless imagination.

cdlxxxi. WILCO: I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

cdlxxxi. WILCO

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart (2001)
Jeff Tweedy
John Stirratt
Leroy Bach
Glenn Kotche
Jay Bennett
(6:58)

from the album that Warner Bros. bought twice!

**

I am an American aquarium drinker
I assassin down the avenue
I'm hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you

Let's forget about the tongue-tied lightning
Let's undress just like cross-eyed strangers
This is not a joke so please stop smiling
What was I thinking when I said it didn't hurt

I want to glide through those brown eyes dreaming
Take you from the inside (baby) hold on tight
You were so right when you said I've been drinking
What was I thinking when we said good night

I want to hold you in the bible black predawn
You're quite a quiet domino bury me now
Take off your band aid cuz I don't believe in touchdowns
What was I thinking when we said hello

I always thought that if I held you tightly
You would always love me like you did back then
Then I fell asleep in the city kept blinking
What was I thinking when I let you back in

I am trying to break your heart
I am trying to break your heart
But still I'd be lying if I said it wasn't easy
I am trying to break your heart

Disposable dixie cup drinker
I assassin down the avenue
I've been hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you

cdlxxiv. BEATLES, THE: No Reply

 cdlxxiv. THE BEATLES

No Reply (1964)
John, vocals, guitar, hand claps
Paul, bass, vocal harmonies, hand claps
George guitar, hand claps
Ringo, drums, hand claps
George Martin, piano
(2:16)

from: Beatles for Sale

Recorded in eight takes on September 30, 1964.

The sad story of Tommy Quickly

Brian Epstein might have pushed too hard. Having severed Tommy from his old band and paired him with The Remo Four, he thought he'd have him hit the charts with a Lennon/McCartney original, Tip of my Tongue (to date, undiscovered as a Beatles recording).

It flopped, big-time.

As did his next four singles. The fifth ("Wild Side of Life") actually charted, and again Epstein asked John and Paul if they'd give him a song.

No Reply was that song. When Quickly failed to quickly perform or record it, John and Paul took it back, and this time recorded it themselves.

Quickly gave up the biz the next year, and later had a nervous breakdown.

cdlxxiii. GANGER, Ted: It Can Happen

cdlxxiii. GANGER, Ted

It Can Happen (2017)
TD, piano, vocal
(4:25)

from: Turning the Pages

A dreamy song that quickly seems to turn all too real!

I'm still in bed, waking up,
Dreaming and dozing and planning my little day

Then a flurry of 5/8

All of a sudden in the blink of an eye
I'm falling
I fall off my bike
I fall into love

And at some point, the singer finds himself in front of a judge. Go figure.

Another great Ganger gala ...

cdlxx: BECKER, Walter: Circus Money

cdlxx. BECKER, Walter (1950-2017)

Circus Money (2008)
WB, vocal
Keith Carlock, drums
Jon Herington, guitar
Ted Baker, keyboards
Jim Beard, keyboards
Chris Potter, tenor saxophone
Larry Klein, bass
Kate Marokowitz, background vocals
Windy Wagner, background vocals
Carmen Carter, background vocals
(4:15)

from: Circus Money

The title track sounds like a personal experience. But apparently it all sprang from that vivid imagination of his. He had dropped some friends off at a circus and went home and thought about it. Sure sounds autobiographical, though: "Little Walter's got a ways to go."

Goddamn, we miss you, dude.

**

They bang the hammer and they pitch the tents
Throw up some posters for the residents
Your daddy's footfalls on the rain-slicked streets
You try to keep up with your tiny feets
Take it easy baby nice and slow
Little Walter's got a ways to go
I lacks a nickel momma don't you know
Circus money for the early show

The tiger's sleeping and he can't wake up
You pitch some pennies in a paper cup
They guess your age -- they guess your weight
You toss the softballs at the china plates
Hold'er steady baby there you go
Let me hit you honey sweet and low
Thus the tab is written blow by blow
Circus money for the evening show

All the horses baby all the men
Round the circle and around again
You watch some hobo take a nasty spill
Laugh like a bastard oh you know you will
You got to have it when you first walk up
You drop a dollar in the old tin cup
You're gonna need it when it's time to go
Circus money for the late late show

cdlxix. LEONHART, Jay: My Shining Hour

cdlxix. LEONHART, Jay (1940-       )

My Shining Hour (1998)
JL, bass
Grady Tate, drums
Ted Rosenthal, piano
Ken Peplowski, saxophone, clarinet
(8:50)

from: Sensitive to the Touch: The Music of Harold Arlen

Daddy to the young geniuses, Michael [see Posts clxxxix and cdxxxviii] and Carolyn [see Post xxx], Jay came from a musical family, as well. With two musician parents and six musician siblings, he was on his way to greatness from an early age.

Studied at Peabody, Berklee and ASCM in Toronto.

One of the hippest bass players around. Check it out. What a tone!

**

Music by Arlen, lyrics by Johnny Mercer, for the 1943 film The Sky's the Limit, sung by Fred Astaire and Sally Sweetland.

**

This moment, this minute
And each second in it
Will leave a glow upon the sky
And as time goes by, it will never die

This will be my shining hour
Calm and happy and bright
In my dreams your face will flower
Through the darkness of the night

Like the lights of home before me
Or an angel watching over me
This will be my shining hour
'Til I'm with you again

Like the lights of home before me
Or an angel watching over me
This will be my shining hour
'Til I'm with you again

cdlxvii. ZAPPA, Frank: How Could I Be Such a Fool?

cdlxvii. ZAPPA, Frank (1940-1993)

How Could I Be Such a Fool?
Seven versions

1. (1966)
FZ, guitar, vocals
Jimmy Carl Black, drums
Ray Collins, vocals
Roy Estrada, bass
Elliot Ingber, guitar
(2:13)

from NOTES ON THE COMPOSITIONS INCLUDED HEREIN:

"How Could I Be Such a Fool is based on a modified nanigo rhythm. We call it a Motown Waltz. It stays in 3/4 time throughout, but shifts in the accents occur from section to section. As an American teen-ager (as an American), this means nothing to you. (I always wondered if I could write a love song.)"

In 1984, when Frank was getting ready to release all his old product (in shiny new boxes: The Old Masters, Vols. 1, 2, and 3), he felt that the original tapes for both We're Only In It For the Money (1968) and this album were so degraded that he called in Barrow and Wackerman to overdub new bass and drum parts.

The purists were outraged -- I say outraged! First of all, the overdubbing was stick-out-your-thumb obvious and somewhat obnoxious.

Secondly, it wasn't necessary, as the Vaultmeister (Joe Travers) proved in 2010:

restored to its original glory.

Moving back in time, a 1965 pre-Freak Out! version.

from Sewart St. Studio, L.A., early '66 ...

from: FZ/OZ

Live from Sydney, Australia, January 20, 1976.

from Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1974.

cdlxiv. SUN RA: Saturn

cdlxiv. SUN RA (1914-1993)

Saturn (1992)
SR, piano
Art Hoyle, trumpet
Dave Young, trumpet
Julian Priester, trombone
Pat Patrick, alto and baritone saxophones
John Gilmore, tenor saxophone
Charles Davis, baritone saxophone
Victor Sproles, bass
William Cochran, drums
Jim Herndon, timpani, timbales
(3:53)

Originally released in 1966, this band is recorded in 1956 ...

Not only do they visit Earth, but Sun Ra writes a tune about his home planet (see Post ii) ...

A very cool and weird unison melody of 28 fast bars, over SR's ostinato piano riff, which then explodes into a normal AABA straight-ahead form, with great solos  ...

Rippin' solos by Patrick; muted and unmuted trumpet by either Hoyle or Young, or both; Gilmore

cdlxii. METHENY, Pat: Wide and Far

cdlxii. METHENY, Pat (1954-       )

Wide and Far (2020)
PM, guitars, keyboards
Gwilyn Simcock, piano
Linda May Han Oh, bass
Antonio Sánchez, drums
(8:27)

from: From This Place

Pat's music these days is always completely different with each new release. Gone are the days of slick "smooth jazz" hooks and riffs; now it's intelligent jazz chamber music.

This quartet is so in tune with each other, like they've beeen playing together for years. Pat is nearly 70 and he is recruiting youngsters now: Simcock is 41; Oh is 37; Sánchez is 50 ...

**

Oh's brilliant solo at the end is doubled with some soft synth sounds ...
