dxciii. BROWN, Clifford (1930-1956)
from Study in Brown
Written by Ray Noble in 1938 as the first movement of his Indian Suite.
A ferocious tempo allows the mostly whole-note (footballs!) rhythm to float above a fiery rhythm section.
The tune is an AABA form -- but it's the B section that gives the tune its delicious harmonic flavor. From the tonic B-Flat, via ii-V-I progressions, Noble moves to B Major, A Major, and G Major, before returning to the tonic.
Brown was formidable musical force, playing trumpet, piano and drums. He co-founded the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey, then went on to form his own group, with the above personnel.
Brown -- who didn't mess with drugs or alcohol -- practiced constantly. His technique is evident.
On June 26, 1956, Brown and Powell (Bud's brother) were travelling to Chicago for a gig. Driving through the night, Bud's wife Nancy was at the wheel as the two musicians slept. Near Bedford, Pennsylvania, she lost control of the car, sending it flying off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and killing all three.
Brown was 25-years-old.
Tomorrow: The threnody written by Benny Golson that forever cemented his name onto a fantastic jazz classic ...
