I was seven or eight when my parents took us to New York to see this musical. The result was my demanding a trombone when we got back home, even though I wasn't old enough for the school's music program yet. So I taught myself the basics before starting 4th grade.
The barbershop quartet completely fascinated me. In the play/movie, Hill teaches them to sing by "talking low." They are soon bursting out in the most glorious four-part harmony:
