cclxxvii. ZAPPA, Frank/THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND: The History of Whipping Post (chronologically)

cclxxvii. ZAPPA, Frank (1940-1993); THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND

The History of Whipping Post (chronologically)

Whipping Post was a track on the Allman Brothers first album, The Allman Brothers Band (1969) ...

Gregg:

"I didn't know the intro was in 11/8 time. I just saw it as three sets of three, and then two to jump on the next three sets ... Duane said, 'that's good man, I didn't know that you understood 11/8.' Of course, I said something intelligent like, 'what's 11/8?' Duane just said, 'okay, dumbass, I'll try to draw it up on paper for you.'"

**

On September 23rd and 24th, 1974, Zappa was performing in Helsinki. The band was getting ready to play Montana, when someone from the audience starting screaming something unintelligible:

Guy in the audience: "Whipping Post"!
FZ: Say that again please?
Guy in the audience: "Whipping Post"!
FZ: "Whipping Post"? Ok, just a second . . . (do you know that?) Oh, sorry, we don't know that one. Anything else? Hum me a few bars of it, please, just show me how it goes, please. Just sing, sing me "Whipping Post" and then maybe we'll play it with you.
Guy in the audience: Ooh-ooh-ooh . . .
FZ: That you very much. And now . . . judging from the way you sang, it must a John Cage composition, right? Here we go, "Montana." One two, one two three four ...

Of course, at this point, Zappa figured they better learn the tune, in case some other crazy person requested it. I'm sure he was excited that it was in 11/8.

It next appeared in a rousing version from this live concert, released posthumously on Halloween 81.

**

Again, from December 11th and 12th, 1981 performances in Santa Monica and San Diego, released on Them Or Us (1984).
