cdxxvi. BECHET, Sidney: Ja Da

cdxxvi. BECHET, Sidney (1897-1959)

Ja Da (1938)
SB, clarinet, soprano saxophone
Tommy Ladnier, trumpet
Mezz Mezzrow, tenor saxophone
Cliff Jackson, piano
Teddy Bunn, guitar
Elmer James, bass
Manzie Johnson, drums
(2:53)

from: Ja Da

Leave it to a European to have made the effort to record the amazing Bechet.

Hughes PanassiƩ -- A French jazz critic -- visited New York in '38 and hired Ladnier to front a band with Sidney, who had to play under an alias due to contractual obligations ("'Pops' King") ...

Ladnier would die in six months from heart problems, but you wouldn't know it from his playing here.

Solos by Jackson, Bunn (nice!), Ladnier (muted), Mezzrow, and Bechet.
