ccxlvi. SHANKAR (1950- )
from: Touch Me There.
Lakshminarayana Shankar was born in Madras (now Chennai) and raised in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) ... he came to the U.S. in 1969 and studied ethnomusicology at Wesleyan.
In 1975, he and John McLaughlin formed Shakti ("creative intelligence, beauty, power") and recorded three magnificent albums.
He played with Zappa for a short period -- producing a magnificent track called Thirteen (from You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 6).
**
Zappa produced this album.
Here Shankar rips it up in a gorgeous, short tune mostly in FIVE. At 1:41 the band plays a fast, unison lick reminiscent of something FZ might have written.
Sharp acute stabs which nicely interrupt the previous rhythmic flow, and comes back to conclude the tune.
