In the spring/summer of '63, as The Beatles were touring with Roy Orbison, Paul wrote the lyrics (he had just met Jane Asher) and then the tune.
Possibly for the first time, John realized what an incredible writing partner he had -- and a sort of friendly competitive songwriting began in earnest.
Again, Paul's sense of syncopation informs the feel and a sophisticated sense of harmonic movement (see bars 8-10 = ii / bVII / V7 / ii ) + that fantastic over chord in bars 20 and 24 (C#Maj7/C) ...
