cxxxiii: BRECKER, Michael: Slings and Arrows

cxxxiii. BRECKER, Michael (1949-2007)

Slings and Arrows (1996)
MB, tenor saxophone
Pat Metheny, guitar
Joey Calderazzo, piano
Dave Holland, bass
Jack DeJohnette, drums
(6:19)

from Tales from the Hudson.

"To be, or not to be - that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Or to take arms against a sea of troubles. And by opposing end them?" -- Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1

The head is composed of two or three different ideas, all beautifully conjoined.

Pat takes off first. He flies through the changes with his usual fluency. Then Michael takes over, cascading 1/8-notes with some broken up phrases. All the while Holland and DeJohnette are keeping up with this blistering pace.

Calderazzo also flies with dazzling technique.

After the return of the head, Brecker slides back in and the tune fades.

Brilliant tune by a guy who died way too young.
