During the 80's, raising two little girls (the third didn't come until '92), I spent a lot of time watching MTV -- more watching the jazz/rock on VH1.

This catchy song was one that I thoroughly enjoyed, every single time I watched it. My Spotify algorithm brought it back to my attention the other day, and I decided I had to transcribe it, and figure out what makes it so appealing:

First of all, that's a wonderful bass line (Mark Egan, Marcus Miller?) and it's that A7 chord -- a semitone above the dominant -- that makes it so interesting.

Franks changes things around for the chorus -- look at that leap, landing on the Supertonic -- going to F#7 before moving up the A7 (which is now a #9 chord) and down to the dominant.

He never studied music formally -- but earned a B.A. from UCLA in comparative literature and an M.A. from the University of Oregon.

No wonder his lyrics are so well-formed and tell some kind of secret story!

A fabulous piece of work.
