I was born in Puerto Rico And my blood is taino Spanish Caribbean in my soul
We came here wearing summer clothes in winter Hearts of sunshine in the cold Your family rented this apartment You'd watch the streetlamps from your perch In the sacramental hour you stepfather in black Preached the fire of the Pentecostal Church No one knows you like I do Nobody can know your heart the way I do No one to testify to all that you've been through But this will

She came from somewhere back in her long ago The sentimental fool don't see Tryin' hard to recreate What had yet to be created once in her life She musters a smile For his nostalgic tale Never coming near what they wanted to say Only to realize It never really was
She had a place in his life He never made her think twice As he rises to her apology Anybody else would surely know He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees No wise man has the power to reason away What seems to be Is always better than nothing And nothing at all keeps sending him
Somewhere back in her long ago Where he can still believe there's a place in her life Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life He never made her think twice As he rises to her apology Anybody else would surely know He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees No wise man has the power to reason away What seems to be Is always better than nothing There's nothing at all But what a fool believes he sees

Variations on "Winter" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons (1997) 1. Thin Ice (3:36) 2. Texas Rain (4:51) 3. Snow What (3:40) David Balakrishnan, violin, baritone violin Evan Price, violin Danny Seidenberg, viola, violin Mark Summer, cello
Seidenberg's adaptation:
1. Thin Ice
Imagine Mr. Vivaldi alive today, living in America, and hearing today's popular music. Imagine the influence of America's musical multi-culture. The Four Seasons may have been a little different. From ominous wind-chimes that herald a change in the weather, to hard rock, tango and a bossa nova beat, the "Winter" concerto is reconsidered.
2. Texas Rain
Now Antonio travels to the New World to teach at an all-girls' school in Texas. Perhaps along the way he meets Bill Monroe or maybe Elvis. It's the gentle rain of the prairie and the lilting sound of the Texas fiddle, along with some original, stately and dignified traveling music. Get along little dogie.
3. Snow What
After a late-breaking news flash, the furious storms arrive with the howling winds of manic improvisations mixed with intricate reconstructions of Vivaldi's original chart. But of course, after all, the holiday spirit is what truly defines the winter season. And to all a good night.

One of the few tunes on Freak Out! to open with such gorgeous jazz chords -- G Major Seventh/A Minor Ninth/G -- and then F Major Seventh (#11) ... The #11 is the B-Natural -- an unusually rich chord for FZ in these early days.
The modulations are also unusual from G to E to E Minor ...
The song ends with a rap about the poor lonely narrator and all the work he did on his car to impress the young lady ...
