dcccxxv. THE BEATLES
Only a Northern Song (1969)
Paul, bass, trumpet, sound effects
John, guitar, glockenspiel, piano, sound effects
George, vocal, organ, sound effects
Ringo, drums
(3:24)
George wrote it for Sgt. Pepper, but John and Paul decided it was "too weak," so we got Within You Without You instead ...
Northern Songs Ltd. had managed the Beatles' copyrights since 1963, when the stock was divided among Dick James, Charles Silver, Brian Epstein, John and Paul.
George and Ringo were left out until the company went public in '65 -- they received 1% of the shares.
The song subliminally denounces the exploitation. The out-of-tune haziness is brilliant.
