Paul:
He commited suicide in 2000.
Paul:
"Dear Boy was actually a song to Linda's ex-husband. 'I guess you never knew what you had missed.' I never told him that, which was lucky, because he's since committed suicide. And it was a comment about him, 'cause I did think, 'gosh, you know, she's so amazing, I suppose you didn't get it."

I guess you never knew, dear boy
What you had found
I guess you never knew, dear boy
That she was just the cutest thing around
I guess you never knew
What you had found, dear boy
I guess you never saw, dear boy
That love was there
And maybe when you look too hard, dear boy
You never do become aware
I guess you never did
Become aware, dear boy
When I stepped in
My heart was down and out
But her love came through
And brought me 'round
Got me up and about
Dear boy
Dear boy, dear boy
Dear boy
When I stepped in
My heart was down and out
But her love came through
And brought me 'round
Got me up and about
I hope you never know, dear boy
How much you missed
And even when you fall in love, dear boy
It won't be half as good as this
I hope you never know how much you missed
Dear boy, how much you missed, dear boy
I guess you never knew, dear boy
That she was just the cutest thing around
I guess you never knew
What you had found, dear boy
I guess you never saw, dear boy
That love was there
And maybe when you look too hard, dear boy
You never do become aware
I guess you never did
Become aware, dear boy
When I stepped in
My heart was down and out
But her love came through
And brought me 'round
Got me up and about
Dear boy
Dear boy, dear boy
Dear boy
When I stepped in
My heart was down and out
But her love came through
And brought me 'round
Got me up and about
I hope you never know, dear boy
How much you missed
And even when you fall in love, dear boy
It won't be half as good as this
I hope you never know how much you missed
Dear boy, how much you missed, dear boy

I was in my 20s when Wings was formed. Still listening to very little Non-Classical music, I remember dismissing the whole thing as silly, thinking that Paul dragged his socialite-photographer wife into the group for sheer publicity ... the band was made up of real musicians, and she was certainly not one of them (I thought).
How wrong I was! Maybe she was an amateur -- but just listen to her harmonies in this wonderful song and one can see that, whatever she didn't know, Paul taught her.

As for Paul's songwriting, check out the deceptive cadence in Bar 9, et seq.; the rich descending bass line in bar 49, and the F#-diminished chord in bar 53!
